CENTRAL OHIO APA NEWS AND EVENTS

SPRING SESSION 2004:

We are halfway through the spring session. Some issues need to be addressed for this session.

    1. WEEKLY PLAYER SURVEYS

We have implemented player surveys for teams to fill out on a weekly basis. Many good comments have been made about them. Some negative comments have also been made regarding these surveys:

      • concern that they will cause hard feelings between teams and the fun will be taken out of the game.
      • Why bother because nothing will be done anyway. Great attitude!

Neither of these statements is true. NO ONE should be encouraging this type of thinking in the league.

The intentions of the surveys are to get a handle on skill levels that are not accurate for players and the best way to do this is to get your opinion. You have every opportunity to state your opinions on the back of the scoresheet. Weekly surveys draw our attention to potentially needed changes. One team's opinion does not cause a player to go up. However, after 2-3 weeks of reviewing the comments, players seem to be leveling out on their own by computer averaging. The program is doing a good job. We have intervened very little in handicaps.

Since this process has started, we have been surprised to see the good comments about the opposing team. This is voluntarily given to us. Thank you for nice comments. As a result, teams who prefer to be good sports and fun to play against are receiving stickers on their next weeks' scoresheets. It is a small way of letting you know we appreciate your spirit of the game.

DO NOT SEND SCORESHEETS BACK WITH FOUL LANGUAGE ON THE BACK. THERE IS NO REASON FOR IT: WE DON'T WANT TO SEE THAT ON THE SCORESHEETS AT ALL!!

Another issue is that teams will say a player needs to go up, is running up innings intentionally (basically sandbagging). We turn the scoresheet over and there are no defensive shots marked against that player. To state again what defensive shots mean: NO INTENT TO MAKE THE BALL. There is nothing we can do if you do not mark defensive shots against the player.

      1. The bottom of the scoresheets need to be READ! When a captain says "I don't bother to read the bottom of the scoresheet". "I didn't know" is not an excuse because you choose not read. This information should be shared with all players.
      2. The captain is the only player who should be calling the office. If players on the team have any issues to discuss with the league office, please contact your captain and have him/her call here to discuss what is needed.

      Poor Sportsmanship:

It has been very disappointing to hear that some teams are rude and disorderly during league play. It seems that some teams are ignoring the rules and bylaws. Some teams have not been courteous and helpful to new teams and totally rude toward these teams. In recruiting new teams and players we emphasize the difference between our league and others that we are an amateur league and the goal is to first have fun while playing pool, meeting new people, and just plain having a fun evening out once a week. When players are treated poorly, we lose both players and teams. 99% of our teams are out for a fun evening with fellow poolplayers. That has been obvious from the surveys. However, the 1% can ruin it for many other teams. Every player is an extension of and represents the APA. Please learn to work together to resolve conflicts. New teams should know the rules by now and need very little help from other teams and all should refresh themselves on the rules and by-laws to avoid unnecessary arguments.

      Make up matches:

We still have some make up matches to be done. Please get them completed as soon as possible. This really affects division standings. Call the league office for handicap updates prior to playing the make up match.

      Matches Played Plaques

We had a great response for the plaques this session. Plaques are being ordered this week. When they are shipped to us, we will let you know. We will probably deliver them to one location in your area and you will need to pick them up there.

      SINGLES BOARDS:

The Spring Singles Regional was held March 6 at the Golden 8 Ball. The following players represented our area at the tournament:

Lawrence Bowe III, David Clark, Mark Wiseman, Scott White, Burton Combs Jr., Mike Dunn, Ron Eddy Brian Forrest, Bryan Fouss, Greg Green, Mitchell Haaf, Theresa Webb, Jeff Kane, John Keep, Joel Kidd, Lee Nash, Dave Paul, Larry Preece.

5 players from our area didn't show to play. One of them was Warren Robison, who had a lot of people come to support him, but because he had a heart attack, he was not there. We wish him the best in his recovery.

Mark Wiseman from Lancaster won the purple tier for skill level 6-7's. Congratulations to Mark and we wish him good luck as he heads to Vegas in April! Thanks to all players who participated.

We have run 4 singles boards this session so far. Anyone wishing to run a board, please contact the league office. We will do whatever we can to promote the board for your area.

      9-BALL:

We have worked very hard to increase team count for 9-ball. We had a double jeopardy league started and the 9-ball portion fell apart. This would have given us the 14 teams we needed in order to send a team to Vegas in August. However, there are currently only 8 9-Ball teams.

The odds of winning at the 9-Ball City tournament and getting a chance to go to Las Vegas to compete in the nationals are so much better than 8-Ball. We don't understand why there is not enough interest for 9-Ball. To our current 9-ball teams: Again, why take a chance at your efforts going to waste. Although this is an amateur league, the goal of all teams should be to compete and win in order to go to Las Vegas for national competition. You are out there every week shooting pool. Do you ever take the opportunity to talk to bar patrons about forming teams? We can't do this by ourselves.

      DOUBLE JEOPARDY:

Double jeopardy league play is always available. It gives teams a chance to play 8 ball and 9 ball on the same night, which frees up the rest of week for other activity. By playing both 8 and 9 ball, your chances of having an opportunity to go to Las Vegas are more than doubled. Please consider double jeopardy for the summer session. We do have teams that would like to participate, particularly in the north end of Columbus, but haven't been able to establish a Double Jeopardy league since 2002.

      WEBSITE:

We had many schedule changes this session, 3 in the last week. They get posted almost immediately on the website. Whenever you look at a schedule on the website, please scroll down to the bottom of the page. The date will tell you how current the schedule is. There has also been some confusion on the Top Gun report posted on the website. The meaning of the headings is as follows: Mp = matches played for the session, Mw = matches won for the session, Topgun = opponents' skill levels (this accumulates with your wins), WinP = Win percentage for the current session. Hope this information helps. We are having problems with our e-mail site pool@apacolumbus.com. Please send any e-mail correspondence to: apacolumbus@hotmail.com.
